Spring 2009

The spring 2009 semester has been challenging to say the least. I am pleased with the final results after the struggle.

My students gave me what I treasured most, strong evidence that they have learned. Their grades and final projects are a clear corroboration that they were listening, studying and applying what they learned in class.

Is has been an honor and a satisfaction to learn from them all. I will forever cherish the memories of the funny anecdotes, the Indian mafia, the JP Morgan newly hires, the Michael Fudge’s clan, and the herculean efforts our international students have to go through to overcome communicational and cultural barriers, my congratulations go to each and every one of my students this Spring 2009 semester.

Hopefully in a not so distant future when this bunch reaches fame and fortune they will become generous supporters of their alma mater and more specially iSchool.

Ladies, Gentlemen please receive my personal and professional regards for a mission accomplished, well done!

An excellent video about the history of the Internet. Time sharing made it all possile at the beginning. It shows how Arpanet, RAND, NPL and CYCLADES innnovations served well to the creation of the network of networks.

The history of the internet explains fundamentals principles that guided the creation of the network protocols that we use today. A fundamental knowledge of them are needed to understand security principles and networking concepts.

It has been my contention for years that the better the Oracle DBA understands the architecture of the database, the bettter prepared he or she will be to administer the database.
Another point worth mentioning is the knowledge of the Os. When troubleshooting any problem or malfuction in the database it makes a difference early on during the troubleshooting process to determine if the Os s the root cause of the malfunction.

Take the time to learn both the DB architectore and the inner details of that Os as well. Here is a video that does a good job explaining the basis of the Oracle architecture.

Linux Apache MySQL PHP

My IST400/600 Linux Sys and Open Source Apps class is putting together a collection of wonderful final projects. A total of 22 bright and enthusiastic students are applying the knowledge, theoretical principles and skills they have learned this semester.

This course provided a set of tools that web developers can use to design, develop, test and deliver web-based applications utilizing open source solutions. Content Management Systems, Learning Management Systems and Blogs applications such as the one running this website are used in their final projects.
